INTERVIEW / DAN CRESTANI

Dan_Title_notext

Meet Dan Crestani. He is a Sydney based Musician, Songwriter, Artist, Painter and Night Watchman, who’s OCD will have him scanning for edits throughout this article. But it is with his specific way of thinking that has given him a strong sense of who he is as an artist. With lyrics like “Fine line ain’t nothing, she spat out lightning… She had quite a style”, accompanied by a beat that you can’t help but groove along to, this boy has a sound that you can’t quite put your finger on, but it’s funky, it’s soulful, it’s fresh.

In his own words: New York is… sick. [It’s] energy – nothing is dead. I live in… Wentworthville. I am… Dan. My style in 3 words… simple, dark, very dark. My EP in 3 words… emotional, dark, light. My first encounter with music was… [after] living in Asia for 10 years. I had no passions, so I decided to be passionate about something [so] I bought a skateboard and a guitar at the same time. I am inspired by… people, friends, parents, mistakes, travelling, partying and good times. I couldn’t live without… baked goods. Currently I am listening to… Frank Ocean, Tom Waits, Marvin Gaye, and Earth Wind and Fire – a lot of soul groove stuff. If I could collaborate with anyone it would be… MJ, Tom Waits and Beyonce. If I wasn’t a musician I would be… a baker. The best piece of advice ever give to me was… don’t go in cycles, go forward. I never thought… I’d be this involved in my craft.
Everyday I… shower.

Summer Days

Today marked my first day back at uni – 2nd year Vis Comm! Can I have a hell yea and a hi-5? I survived first year and am coming back for more. As I sat in my creative coding class this morning sipping on my iced-long-black, ready and eager to learn, I realised the days of making spontaneous plans with friends, chilling out by the beach for endless hours and getting up to everything but nothing in particular is indeed over. Cue late nights, truck loads of coffee and maybe a few tears…
Here’s to the year ahead!

After the shoot I could not, not interview the newly residing New Yorker Ashka Shen, who took the plunge last year and moved from busy Sydney to even more so hustlin’ and bustlin’ New York City. So here it is in her words:
New york is… everything. I live in… Brooklyn. I am… happy and looking forward to what 2015 will bring.
My style in 3 words… easy, polished, simple. My first encounter with fashion was… my dad designed and made some of my clothes when I was around 4, I was the most stylish kid around. I am inspired by… people, their energy and stories. The craziest thing that has ever happened to me in New York… It’s yet to happen! The one thing I couldn’t live without would be… A good book. Currently I am listening to… Triple J. If I wasn’t a photographer I would be… A florist. The best piece of advice ever given to me was… Never underestimate yourself. I never thought… I would actually be able to call New York home. Everyday I… Fall in love with this world a little more. Tomorrow… is a busy day! If you’re off there anytime soon, she recommends eating at Ruby’s, shopping at Beacon’s Closet (yes! One of my favourite stores), going to the MoMA and staying anywhere in Brooklyn.

Holiday mode

IMG_5492

It’s not quite the holidays, but with the end of semester wrapping up and my final Portfolio and 2000 word essay sitting high on my priority list, I couldn’t help and kick-back a little in this incredibly summer-like weather this weekend. And what says relaxed better than a slouchy pair of culottes and a hawaiian button down? I’m feeling oh-so George Clooney in The Descendants – but in the best possible way.

You can see by my smile I was super excited to be shooting again and collaborating with Andrea. It was one of the only chances I got to be away from my computer digitising my font (Yes, I’m making a font – can you believe it?), more on that later once I finally finish it.

PAINT PLAY

celine_matthewstone samsmithpaint_2

As soon as the Chanel and Celine Spring/Summer 2014 collections debut on the runway a few months back, I found myself attracted to paint. The idea of bold messy strokes, the unintentional mixing of colours and the play factor was enticing to me. It meant I didn’t have to achieve anything specific but just do, act and experiment. I was extremely excited when one of my studio classes last semester involved mono-printing  and from this it sparked a somewhat obsession with playing with paint (i’ll post more of that later). For now, I’ve scanned in two of my first prints I thought were most successful from the studio class.
